Looks like you’ve finished reading those hammock’s detail above. That’s good. Now let’s move onward in this section.
Okay, guys sleeping in a hammock is a fun and exciting idea. But what do you expect more from it? Obviously, a good and comfortable sleep that falls into the hammock’s functionality.
Besides, there are a lot of things you should consider before buying a hammock. Such as its size, design, weight, material, insulation, accessories, and protection.
So, below I am going to talk about these things. As a result, it will help you to make wiser decisions while shopping for a hammock.
There are two sizes for hammock- single and double.
Single hammock saves weight for a solo backpacker and they have a width of 4- to 5-feet. A single hammock is perfect for 1 person as it has less spacious lounging. Besides, it has a weight capacity of around 300 lbs.-400 lbs. Again, it has ultralight models closer to 250 lbs. capacity.
The double hammock is designed to chill with your family or friend. It comes in a width of 5- to- 6 feet. Furthermore, it offers a more spacious lounging for two people. A double hammock has a weight capacity of 400 lbs. -500 lbs. Besides, it has an ultra-light capacity of 350 lbs.
If you want to sleep in a hammock then go for a “flat lay” design as it is comfortable and good for your back. Now, some people complain about the traditional “U-shaped” hammock to be uncomfortable and painful for the back.
You can also go for the asymmetric design. As it allows you to sleep diagonally that helps you to sleep much flatter than the traditional hammock. By the way, a lot of people prefer asymmetric design for their comfort.
The weight of the hammock plays an important role while shopping. If it is your first time shopping a hammock, then you might think a few ounces won’t be a problem. But these extra ounces are going to weigh on your shoulder throughout the camping trip.
So, your best bet will be buying a hammock that is strong and lightweight that can easily fit into a small pack.
However, if you want to buy a heavy hammock for some other causes, then I would advise you to buy the one with ultra-light slings or a bigger size. As a result, it can fit two persons and perfect for outdoor use.
Nylon is a lightweight and durable material and most of the portable hammock is made with this. So, whenever one buys a nylon hammock make sure it is labeled with rip-stop or rip-resistant. It actually means if the fabric is torn or damaged then it will not damage further like those regular nylon fabrics.
Besides many rip-stop nylon fabrics are waterproof that makes it perfect for outdoor use.
You can also try polyester fabric if you’re tight on the budget. Polyester is durable and less expensive than nylon. But still, it is a good material for a portable hammock. The polyester fabric features a stiffer feel that’s why it allows for a flatter lying surface.
But sometimes cheap polyester fabric might not be waterproof and they can feel a bit heavier than nylon.
The hand-woven string material is another good option for the hammock. They are popular for being comfortable and stretchy. However, they are not so perfect for overnights as they lack in open weave and weather resistance.
The insulation is an important aspect if you’re going to sleep in your hammock at night. You can catch a cold very fast even in summer at high altitudes. So, good insulation can help you to stay chilled in hot climates.
Below some common ways are given to add insulation to your hammock:
- Do you sleep over your usual camping pad? If you do then try to have a mummy-shaped pad because it helps to reduce pad sliding. And if you own a tent sleeping pad earlier then try to avoid it. Because they are not the perfect shape for a hammock and it keeps sliding out of position in the night.
- You should use a double layer hammock. Why? Because they contain a separate compartment for your sleeping pad to stay in place. So that you won’t discover yourself sleeping beside it, instead of over it. Thus, it is a cool option for pad users however it might add some weight.
- Lastly, use an under-quilt beneath you. It stays under the hammock and insulates your body from the outdoor cold. However, it is a bit expensive, and a great option for experienced backpackers.
Here the accessories include straps for the setup. While other popular choices include a tarp for rain, an under-quilt for cold temperature, and a net for mosquitoes or bugs.
Whenever, you’re shopping for a hammock make sure it gives protection against wind, rain, cold, and bug. If it lacks in giving protection against any of these elements, then it’s absolutely dangerous for you.
Well, this is a hard time for me to announce the name of one product that I like the most. Actually, thrice of the Hennessey’s hammock are superb considering its qualities and features. However, after considering lots of things I would like to go with:
Hennessy Double Bottom Deep Jungle Series Hammock.
